Pros: Sound Quality is excellent - MUCH better than popular smaller rechargeable portable speakers.

I bought the Atlec Lansing speaker and an iHome-iHM60GT at the same time. The Altec Lansing sounds MUCH better including better bass. I have tried 3 brands like the smaller iHome-ihm60GT and they all add an acoustical resonance at various frequencies from within their housings. Imagine the sound if you placed a small speaker in a tin can . . they're not really that bad, but it gives you the idea of a small echo-chamber messing with your music. They also distort at lower volume levels than the Altec Lansing. There is no comparison for sound quality . . but to be fair, this Altec Lansing is twice the size and price.

Cons: The speaker wire is too short . . plan on getting a 3.5mm Male/Female extension cable for your speaker. The audio wire on the speaker is about 10" long. You need an audio extension cable to prevent jerking the speaker around by the wire when handling your phone or music player. The audio cable is very delicate and can't take much abuse.

So . . . Amazon has many audio extensions listed, but most are way too long or poor quality. This is the only one I see on Amazon that looks good and not too long . . BlueRigger 3.5mm Male to Female Stereo Audio Cable (6 Feet).

Make it rechargeable:
If you add a USB cable and rechargeable batteries it can be charged to play 25-30 hours on a charge. It can also be charged and played at the same time, but in some cases a phone charger may pass a slight hum into the audio. This possible hum is not noticable when playing music and does not happen at all when the USB cable is connected to your computer.

When I ordered the speaker I also ordered AAA Sanyo NiMH rechargeable batteries from Amazon Sanyo NEW 1500 eneloop 4 Pack AAA Ni-MH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries. This conversion took about 20 minutes. I soldered the USB wire connection to the resistors and then stabilized the wire positions on the battery terminals with a Hot-Glue gun. Use the Hot-Glue gun after the wires are squeezed between the batteries and the battery contacts to freeze the wire and battery positions. The connections at the battery terminals are completely unstable without using the Hot-Glue gun after the wires are positioned. (hot glue peals off of plastic with a pen knife if you need to replace batteries at some point)

Items Needed:
1. A drill to run the usb wire thought the plastic rim in the battery compartment. !!drill from inside to outside !!
2. A usb charger and cable left over from a retired iPhone or other cell phone.
3. 2 resistors 1/2 watt 10 ohm from radio shack.
4. 3 AAA NiMH batteries like the Sanyos mentioned above. Don't use NiCd - only 1/3 the capacity of NiMH.
5. A hot glue gun. This cheap tool is great to have around for fairly-strong but REVERSABLE glue jobs. (Link Below)

My Samsung USB cable had 4 wires and Red/Black are power. Obviously observe polarity. The photos show which 2 battery contacts to use with + and - labels.

Note: You must clip off one tab on the battery cover where the USB wire goes through. This tab is not one of the 2 latches so it has no effect the cover's fit.

Charge rates:
The batteries charge at 45ma with the two 10 ohm resistors. This is slow maintenance level charge for NiMH batteries so you don't have to unplug the charger between uses.

If you want a faster 12 hour charge, use a single 10 ohm resistor for 70ma charge rate.

**use at least 1 resistor . . . otherwise the charge rate jumps to 800ma. This will destroy the batteries and may melt your speaker in the process.

Play time on battery:
The speaker draws between 20 and 30 ma depending on the music. With the 800 mah Sanyo batteries, it goes 25 to 30 hours. If you forget to turn the speaker off but are not playing music, it goes for days on a charge.
